Why I Love Improv

Improv in dance is exactly what it sounds like: Creating movement on the spot. It can be very difficult, and actually requires lots of practice, which seems counterintuitive. Improv requires the full trust of your own body and those watching you. It requires confidence and for the dancer to let go of any mental or physical blocks they hold. When improving, there are many times where your body may get "stuck". Being able to resolve these "knots" while continuing your movement is the most difficult part. Every week after class, I will stay in the studio and improv. It helps me create creative movements and come up with new ways I can move my body. Improv is something every dancer needs. It helps in choreography, stylism, creativity, and confidence. It is how you create movement and discover your own distinct way of moving. Sharing improv can be scary because it can look awkward or strange at time. But I love seeing what my body does at its freest.
