This week I was introduced to a non-profit called Dancers Beyond Labels. Upon finishing my Movement for Mind session this week, the owner of the studio where we host our initiative talked to me about this initiative. It focuses on empowering dancers of all shapes and sizes, promoting positive body image, and rejecting traditional dance industry standards. My initiative Movement for Mind focuses similarly on the mental aspects of dance, even if more so in terms of using dance as a tool to regulate stress and harmful thinking. Negative body image is also included in this. From the beginning, I have emphasized dance's role in shaping my perception of my body today. Just like many girls around the world, I have struggled a lot with body image issues. Dance has allowed me to feel good about my body not in terms of how it looks, but about how well it can move me and keep me healthy. Watching my body create beautiful shapes and lines was all I started focusing on and slowly I grew a greater and new appreciation for my body and all it can do. I wanted to focus on body image and perception for today's post because it has been a huge part of my life, sometimes consuming a majority of my thoughts. Through my initiative, I want people to have a new perception of dance, one that does not include negative language about appearance, strict beauty standards, and impossible goals. I want people to be able to appreciate and love their bodies more through dance, not the opposite. This is why I wanted to highlight the important work Dancers Beyond Labels is doing in the US. A big part of mental health is self-love, and I wanted to talk a little bit about my viewpoints and goals.
